Meditations and musings while I pick away at my family history. Of primary interest are the surnames FELD, BRINK, HOLTSCHLAG, WINKING, Meinken, Broering (Bröring), Siebers, Hessing, Luegering (Lügering), Schepers, Bruening (Brüning), Schonhoff (Schönhoff), Heuer, Wielage, Schröer, Geling, Bödder, Roters, Duvaleus/Duwelius/Dewelius, Schmeing, Vögeding/Vageding, Wilgenbusch, Peerenbaum, and Kappenhagen; and the regions of Quincy (Ill.), St. Louis (Mo.), and the German districts of Cleve/Kleve (NR-W), Borken (NR-W), Langen (Lower Saxony) and the Münsterland region.
If you're reading this, you probably share my passion for genealogy. You may also share my predicament: your family members may have a passing interest in your findings, but next to no tolerance for your tales of the hunt. Your world may be rocked by, say, the news that the Diocese of Essen has finally digitized and put their dusty registers online. But relay that to a sibling and you might get a "that's nice" as they try to hide an eye roll. As for your spouse, I'll wager he or she is only humoring you. At best, they're excited because you're excited, but they're not enthused for the same reason you are.
Sound familiar? Or is it just me?
This blog is my outlet. I'm vocalizing into the digital void. I do so mainly for myself to organize my thoughts and track my journey. But if you've found your way here, hello. It would be gratifying to know if anything I share connects with you.
Lastly, about the name. Yes, it's a thinly veiled pun. Four bears. Forebearers. No one said this couldn't be fun.
